The United States produces close
to 1100 million short tons (about a million million kilograms) of coal
per year, and exports about 13% of it. The electric power industry
uses 85% of the total, and all other consumers use a mere 2%.
Some 62% of the coal is surface-mined; 38% is from underground mines. Bituminous coal accounts for 58%, subbituminous coal accounts for 34%, lignite accounts for 8%, and antrhacite coal accounts for less than 1/2 of a percent.
